About the Holy Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Community

HMUCC is a special Catholic community of praise and worship, based and registered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Landover Hills, Maryland, under the Archdiocese of Washington. We are dedicated to promoting the legacy of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda, and other holy men and women of African descent, in a special way.

Who we are

One spiritual bond

Launched in 2022 by the Catholic faithful in the D.C. metro area, HMUCC brings together a diverse group of people who share that spiritual bond of personal devotion, communal prayer and public service.

Our history

Fifty years in the making

The celebration of the legacy and the heritage of this devotion has been taking place in different places in the region, with a monthly Ugandan Mass and the annual Uganda Martyrs’ Day events.

It was not until mid-2022 that the then parochial vicar, Fr. Ebuka Mbanude, on our behalf, asked the then pastor of St. Mary’s, Fr. Evelio Menjivar-Ayala (now an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington), for a place to host our worship and fellowship.

This came after more than fifty years of devotees holding Uganda Martyrs Day services in different churches in the area, almost every single year.

Our vision

A dynamic community of Catholics, leading model lives infused with the values and virtues of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda, through faith-driven, civically engaging and socially-conscious endeavors.

Our mission

What we set out to do

1

To mobilize the Ugandan-American community and all Catholic faithful in the DMV area in promoting the legacy and devotion to the Holy Martyrs of Uganda.

2

To support development projects and fund-raising activities that will assist the parish and other Catholic institutions in the area and in Uganda.

3

To liaise with sister associations and communities of faith in promoting better civic engagement, education and professional outcomes, and the social well-being of the members across the region.

4

To run programs in which the people who share the heritage of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda can relate with each other towards promoting the spiritual and social mission of the Church.
